Kim Deal, a renowned musician from Dayton, Ohio, has released her first single “Coast” under her own name through 4AD. Premiered on BBC Radio 6Music, the song is now available worldwide across all platforms.
“Coast” finds its beginnings in 2020, inspired by a moment at her friend Mike Montgomery’s wedding where the house band, The Grape Whizzers, played Jimmy Buffett’s 1977 classic “Margaritaville” with a humorous twist. However, the song’s inception can be traced back to the year 2000 when Kim spent a challenging off-season on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. Despite her self-professed dislike for the sun, beach, and watersports, she was captivated by the local culture where young workers frequently checked the WAM for surfing conditions.
The track was recorded by Steve Albini at his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago, adding his distinct touch to the production. Kim’s sister Kelley Deal plays guitar, with Lindsay Glover and Breeders alum Mando Lopez forming the rhythm section. The song is enriched by the horns of Chicago marching band Mucca Pazza, creating a unique and vibrant sound.
Kimberley Ann Deal, born June 10, 1961, has had a profound impact on the alternative rock scene. She originally rose to prominence as the bassist and co-vocalist for the Pixies from 1986 to 1993 and later from 2004 to 2013. She is also the frontwoman of the Breeders, a band she formed in 1989.
Deal joined Pixies in January 1986 and adopted the stage name Mrs. John Murphy for their early albums “Come on Pilgrim” and “Surfer Rosa.” During the Pixies’ hiatus, she formed the Breeders with Tanya Donelly of Throwing Muses and Josephine Wiggs of The Perfect Disaster, among others. Following their debut album “Pod,” her twin sister Kelley Deal replaced Donelly.
After Pixies disbanded in early 1993, Deal shifted her focus back to the Breeders, releasing the platinum-selling album “Last Splash,” featuring the hit single “Cannonball.” The Breeders went on hiatus in 1994 when Kelley entered drug rehabilitation. During this period, Kim adopted the stage name Tammy Ampersand and formed the Amps, releasing the album “Pacer” in 1995. Following her own rehabilitation, she reformed the Breeders, releasing “Title TK” in 2002 and “Mountain Battles” in 2008.
In 2004, Deal rejoined the Pixies for their reunion until she left in 2013 to concentrate on the Breeders. The band’s most famous lineup reunited to celebrate the 20th anniversary of “Last Splash” with new tours. In 2018, the Breeders released their fifth album “All Nerve,” reuniting the Deals, Wiggs, and Macpherson since “Last Splash.”
“Coast” marks a significant milestone in Kim Deal’s illustrious career, signifying her evolution as an artist and her ability to continually redefine her musical expression. This release sets the stage for more innovative work, solidifying her status as a pivotal figure in alternative rock. As she embarks on this solo journey, fans can anticipate a blend of her signature sound with new, explorative elements.
