Emerging from the underground club scene and warehouse parties of late 1980s London, Galliano made their mark with their debut single on the Acid Jazz label in 1988. The band, which seamlessly blended music, dance, fashion, art, design, and literature, quickly became a symbol of a vibrant cultural movement.

In 1990, Galliano became the first act signed to Gilles Peterson’s Talkin’ Loud label, releasing their album “Welcome to the Story,” produced by Chris Bangs, the originator of the term Acid Jazz. The band’s unique style, characterized by Gabicci sweaters, beads, and skullcaps, reflected a scene rooted in reinvention. They drew inspiration from a variety of sources, including seventies Jamaican style and records from artists like the Last Poets and Watts Prophets, creating a cohesive and solid musical amalgamation.

After a long hiatus, Rob Gallagher and vocalist Valerie Etienne have reunited for their first album since 1997. They are joined by longtime Galliano members Ernie McKone on bass, Crispin Taylor on drums, and Ski Oakenfull on keys. The album also features guest performances from saxophonist Jason Yarde and percussionist Crispin ‘Spry’ Robinson.

While Galliano’s earlier work was influenced by the records they encountered in clubs, their latest project draws inspiration from the dynamic global jazz scene, spanning from the Total Refreshment Centre in London to International Anthem in Chicago. Over forty years since their formation, Galliano continues their creative journey with their new album “Halfway Somewhere.” The music reflects their enjoyment of the process and their ongoing exploration of new musical landscapes. Their approach to creating music now differs significantly from their early days, but their commitment to innovation and musical exploration remains steadfast.
