Pavel Milyakov, also known by his Buttechno alias, presents his latest sonic exploration with the album Entropic Vision. This release under his Psy X label takes listeners on an atmospheric journey, blending a range of styles from ambient and slowcore to dark garage and experimental trance. Known for his versatility, Milyakov has long been a figure in the electronic music landscape, fusing rave-inspired techno with avant-garde influences across a prolific discography. In Entropic Vision, he continues to push boundaries, bringing in a range of collaborators, including Richie Culver, Martyna Basta, Yana Pavlova, and Torus, all of whom contribute to the album’s expansive sonic palette.
The album opens with Moon Chant, where Milyakov’s haunting guitar work intertwines with Martyna Basta’s ethereal choral touches, setting a melancholic yet immersive tone. The collaboration with Richie Culver on Tesco introduces a moodier, ambient atmosphere, akin to the somber soundscapes of Burial, with spoken-word poetry that deepens the sense of isolation and introspection. Milyakov’s collaboration with Torus on Eternal Break takes the listener into a different realm, mixing breakbeats with trance-like pads, giving nods to the experimental work of artists like DJ Lostboi while maintaining Milyakov’s signature emotional depth.
On the B-side, Milyakov shifts gears with Gabba-17, an instrumental track that delivers an eerie techno experience rather than the high-octane gabber its title suggests. This track highlights Milyakov’s ability to evoke strong emotions through minimalist yet haunting production, drawing parallels to artists such as Bendik Giske, who similarly blend experimentalism with emotional resonance. The album’s closer, The Thrill, features Ukrainian singer Yana Pavlova and recalls the dreamlike, shoegaze influences of their previous collaboration, Blue LP, from 2021. Pavlova’s delivery against a backdrop of slowcore textures encapsulates the album’s emotional core, ending on a note that feels both haunting and reflective.
Throughout Entropic Vision, Milyakov seamlessly blends diverse elements, from trance to ambient and beyond, creating a cohesive narrative of negative ecstasy and melancholic beauty. By collaborating with a range of artists, including Richie Culver and Yana Pavlova, Milyakov showcases his mastery in fusing genres and emotions, much like how Alex Zhang Hungtai explores the intersections of sound and sentiment in his work. Entropic Vision stands as a bold statement in the evolving world of electronic and experimental music.
