The ever-evolving musical journey of Richard Russell, the guiding force behind Everything Is Recorded, gave the world a new dimension to his work in 2025 with the release of “Solstice Equinox.” This vibrant record, unique in its concept and execution, reflects the extraordinariness of its creator, a record producer who is also the owner of XL Recordings, a renowned British record label.
Richard Russell’s musical odyssey continued its upward trajectory when he dived into the collaborative project known as Everything Is Recorded. A brainchild of Russell, Everything Is Recorded made its impact known with earlier studio albums like “Everything Is Recorded by Richard Russell” in 2018, followed by “Friday Forever” in 2020, and “Temporary” in 2025. Russell ventured into new territory by producing forty unique pieces during four special days, each coinciding with a significant astronomical event – a solstice or equinox.
“Solstice Equinox” turned out to be a grand assemblage of diverse talent. Augmented by a roster of musicians that included the likes of Alabaster DePlume, Jah Wobble, Ibeyi, Samantha Morton, Laura Groves, Jack Peñate, and more, Russel transformed these spontaneous musical brainstorming sessions into a unique collection of tracks. This musical alliance resonated Russell’s vision, their unique music styles giving life to “Solstice Equinox”.
Russell’s musical evolution can be traced back to his early days at XL Recordings. After joining the label in 1991, he significantly contributed to its success and growth, making it a house for iconic music figures such as Dizzee Rascal, White Stripes, Thom Yorke, and MIA. Russell’s half ownership and chairmanship of the label by 2007 further exemplify his influence.
Among other notable ventures, Russell’s collaboration with American musician and lyricist Gil Scott-Heron for the album “I’m New Here” reflects his expertise. Shortly after this in 2011, Russell, accompanied by Damon Albarn and other producers, embarked on a trip to Congo. Together, they established DRC Music (Democratic Republic of the Congo Music) and created the album “Kinshasa One Two”.
His proven track record as a producer continued with co-producing “The Bravest Man in the Universe,” Bobby Womack’s studio album with Damon Albarn. Russell became the youngest winner of the esteemed Strat Award at the Music Week Awards in London in 2012. This achievement followed by XL Recordings being named Label of the Year only added to his list of accolades.
Russell’s artistic expression extends beyond the recording studio. His 2020 autobiography, “Liberation Through Hearing,” is a testament to his creativity and influence in the musical sphere. Furthermore, his musical duo with Samantha Morton, Sam Morton, witnessed the release of their debut studio album, “Daffodils & Dirt,” in 2024. Russell’s landscape of creativity transcends boundaries, as exemplified by the vibrant and diverse nature of “Solstice Equinox,” a significant landmark in his musical oeuvre.
