Italian composer Caterina Barbieri continues to push the boundaries of electronic music with her highly acclaimed album Ecstatic Computation, which was named Bleep’s album of the year in 2019. Now, Barbieri releases her sister album Myuthafoo, a collection of tracks that explore similar themes of perception, time, and cosmology. Drawing on her extensive touring and experience, Barbieri creates a mesmerizing sonic landscape that intertwines modular synth and composer, resulting in a cosmic ballet of complex patterns.
In Myuthafoo, Barbieri skillfully manipulates sequences of synths, allowing singular notes to soar and scatter unpredictably through the tracks. The title track, for example, sees these notes ascend in pitch and altitude, while delicate celestial sparkles rhythmically fade away. The album opens with the visceral and electrifying “Memory Leak,” followed by “Math of You,” where swirling sparks and colliding atoms create intense and ever-changing melodies. One standout track, “Sufyosowirl,” previously featured in the Berlin Atonal compilation, showcases Barbieri’s ability to transform modulated synths from starlight into elastic snaps, representing a sonic metamorphosis.
Fans of Caterina Barbieri will find Myuthafoo to be a fascinating exploration of her sonic philosophies and processes, building upon the fractal structures established in Ecstatic Computation. Barbieri’s innovative approach to electronic music sets her apart from other contemporary artists and cements her status as a boundary-breaking composer in the genre.
