Descended from a rich line of Ecuadorian culture, Roberto Carlos Lange, better known in the music world as Helado Negro, is an American musician who poignantly explores themes of identity and community in his music. Lying at the heart of his discography is the illustrious celebration of Latino heritage, a legacy etched deeply in his soul since his birth in South Florida in 1980, to Ecuadorian immigrants. His upcoming release, an EP titled ‘The Last Sound on Earth’, scheduled for November 2025 through Big Dada, a sub-label of Ninja Tune, only further accentuates his unique blend of electronic textures, delicate vocals, and emotive storytelling.
Just as water reflects light differently at various angles, so too does Lange’s music refract varying aspects of life at different moments, painting a rich and vivid picture of the human experience. His songs dance gracefully between the spectrum of grief and hope, expressing sentiments that are at once personal yet wholly universal. The upcoming EP takes us on an introspective journey, wrestling with themes of sadness and loneliness, and ultimately finding solace in the midst of emotional turmoil through their transformative power.
Akin to an audible aurora borealis dancing in sync with melancholic poetry, the songs defy the conventional paradigms of contemporary music, inviting listeners to ponder the ultimate enigma: the last sound they might hear. The songs evoke feelings of heartache and isolation, yet in their very struggle, they exude an impassioned sense of resilience.
Reflecting on Helado Negro’s fascinating career progression, it is of note that he began crafting his intimate blend of music back in 2009 with his first full-length album titled ‘Awe Owe’. Throughout the years, his music evolved, garnering distinct accolades, including the Joyce Foundation award in 2015, and a United States Artists Fellow in Music in 2019. His unique combination of electronic music and reflective songwriting led up to his pivotal 2019 album, ‘This Is How You Smile’, which was awarded ‘Best New Music’ and an 8.5 rating by Pitchfork.
Helado Negro’s success does not exist in isolation. His influence is seen in the rise of musicians such as Sufjan Stevens, known for his indie folk and electro-pop sounds grounded in a deeply moving narrative, as well as the globally celebrated band Asthmatic Kitty, with whom Lange has collaborated, drawing from their shared love of IDA and pop fusion.
In a world that can feel abrasive and divided, Helado Negro stands as a beacon of unity and resilience, using his music to tenderly express his vulnerabilities while simultaneously connecting people across borders. The upcoming release, just like its predecessors, underpins the strength and vitality of what it means to be ‘Young, Latin and Proud’, a tagline that he has rightfully earned. As the world anticipates the impeding release of ‘The Last Sound on Earth’, one thing remains certain. Helado Negro’s music affirms that whatever the last sound one hears may be, it will undoubtedly be imbued with poignant emotions, hope, and a sense of community, capturing the essence of our shared human experience.
