Marcel Dettmann, a renowned figure in the techno community, hails from a small town near Berlin, where the seeds of his passion for electronic music were sown. His musical influences are diverse, from Depeche Mode and The Cure to Post-Punk and Industrial, all of which shaped his affinity for techno. Techno, for Dettmann, has always been about pushing the boundaries and continually evolving, a principle that he practices both in his music and his personal life.
Known for his relentless drive and innovative spirit, Dettmann has left an indelible imprint in the realms of electronic music. As a regular at the famed Berlin club, Berghain, he brought to the turntables a distinctive sound that transcended borders and stirred global dancefloors. Beyond the club scene, his versatility extends to the creation of compilation albums and interdisciplinary art projects that touch on various mediums and genres.
Dettmann’s expansion into the techno scene did not stop at being a DJ and producer. He established his record label, Marcel Dettmann Records (MDR), becoming a platform for championing emerging artists and further diversifying his contribution to the electronic music industry. In an industry often soaked in similarities, Dettmann’s innovative approach has become his signature, setting him apart from his counterparts.
Embarking on a fresh chapter of his blooming career, Dettmann presents “My Own Shadow: Approaching,” an imaginative project that merges his varied artistic expressions. The idea of “My Own Shadow” is a metaphor for the unseen facets of his creativity that have been accruing over the years. This project, unlike his past endeavors, is a multi-sensory narrative combining techno, film, and photography, providing an immersive experience to the audience.
Marking the first official release of “My Own Shadow,” the 5-track EP “Approaching” lands on !K7 Records. It encapsulates a range of techno and ambient sounds, resonating with an electric energy that distinguishes it from Dettmann’s earlier works. From the title track’s chilling ambiance to the conscious techno of “DMT” and “Without A Cause,” each piece adds a unique narrative to this living archive. Dettmann’s deep-dive into artistic experimentation sets a new standard, both sonically and visually, for what techno can be.
Throughout his career, Dettmann has remained resiliently consistent. He has crafted his unique space within the techno realm, matching timeless sound design with brutalist beauty in titles such as “Dettmann” and “Fear of Programming.” Though multiple strains of underground dance music have faded in and out of fashion, Dettmann, like similar artists including Kraftwerk and Jeff Mills, stays committed to the purity and power of techno.
Again, within his latest project “My Own Shadow: Approaching” Dettmann embodies the relentless pursuit of innovation, blending sound, image, and space, forging a sensory pathway that’s never the same twice.
