Emerging as an instrumental figure in the contemporary jazz scene, Yussef Dayes, a drummer and record producer, is known for his unique ability to blend diverse musical influences into a harmonious mesh of sound. Notorious for his collaborations with Minami Kizuki, Kamaal Williams, Tom Misch, and others, Yussef has been at the forefront of several critically acclaimed projects. Among these initiatives was the much-celebrated ‘Mt. Fuji FM,’ a limited-edition marbled vinyl creation that was recorded live at the world famous location, offering an array of innovative compositions while providing an exclusive peek into Yussef’s behind-the-scenes journey.

A native of South London and a member of a musically inclined family, Dayes’ introduction to music was at a tender age. It was a confluence of diverse musical genres ranging from jazz to reggae that helped shape his sensibilities. Simultaneously absorbing the musical nuances from his father, his brother, and his community, Dayes began carving out his path as an accomplished drummer. By his early twenties, Dayes had already gained quite a reputation with the band United Vibrations and later with the duo Yussef Kamaal.

A turning point in his career was the release of the album ‘Black Focus’ in 2016 with keyboardist Kamaal Williams. The duo’s jazz-infused sounds embedded with elements of spontaneity and flow went on to set a new standard for their contemporaries. Subsequently, Dayes released several solo projects such as ‘Welcome to the Hills’ and ‘Live at Joshua Tree,’ where he showcased his innovative use of traditional jazz structures infused with contemporary beats. By 2025, things had come full circle as Dayes collaborated with renowned singer Minami Kizuki on the album ‘Amami,’ allowing him to explore and experiment with new sounds and meet cultures.

Born on the beautiful island of Amami ÅŒshima in Japan, Kizuki Minami is an adept vocalist known for her unique interpretations of traditional Shima-uta folk songs and pop music. With a memorable debut in 2009, Kizuki used her impressive skills to keep the folklore of her homeland alive. Her vocal technique, ‘guin,’ a form of sound modulation indigenous to Amami ÅŒshima music, became her signature style; it mesmerized listeners worldwide and earned her the reputation of a skilled J-pop artist.

Collaborating with Dayes on the album ‘Amami,’ Kizuki brought a unique synergy to the project with her soulful voice. In fact, this collaboration bridged the gap between traditional and modern, East and West, creating a sound that was at once innovative and familiar.

In a nutshell, Yussef Dayes is a musician who continually challenges boundaries and is not afraid to explore disparate musical landscapes. Whether it is a collaboration with Minami Kizuki or a solo project, Dayes embodies the spirit of a true artist: continually evolving, experimenting, and redefining musical trends. With each beat pattern, each tempo change, Dayes crafts a symphony that echoes his skill, creativity, and unmatched passion for music.
