The British incorporation of electronic sound The Black Dog, was conceived back in 1989 by the collective genius of Ken Downie, Ed Handley and Andy Turner. This triad has significantly contributed to the early 1990s home-listening aesthetic of techno music. Their influence was further broadened when they signed a deal with Warp Records in 1993 leading to the release of critically acclaimed albums like Bytes (1993) and Spanners (1995). Following 1995, the group underwent a change when Handley and Turner decided to invest their time on another venture- Plaid, leaving Downie to keep the essence of The Black Dog alive. He succeeded in his endeavor when Richard and Martin Dust joined the team. This fresh collaboration resulted in an album titled “Book of Dogma” in 2007, comprising of their earlier EPs.
While they persistently shaped their identity in the world of music, they also contributed to different names such as Close Up Over, Xeper, Atypic, I.A.O., Balil and the Discordian Popes. They have also offered their creative touch to remixes, including those for artists like Björk. This forced them to come out of their shell and push the boundaries of their creative endeavor.
The band took a turn when they crossed paths with Richard and Martin Dust, the minds behind Dust Science Recordings in 2001. This was a new beginning for The Black Dog, bringing in new energy, leading to onstage performances, and the release of multiple albums and EPs on Dust Science. One of their admired creations “Radio Scarecrow” in 2008 resulted in a nomination for DJ Mag’s Best of British 2008.
Their cutting-edge creativity hasn’t shown any sign of pause yet with their venture into Brian Eno‘s realm with “Music for Real Airports,” a commentary on the spectrum of emotions stirred by airports. This direction helped them earn a reputable spot in the music industry.
In 2025, the group pulled off a high-point music experience named ‘Loud Ambient.’ This particular creation saw the influence of Rothko’s artwork with his color fields, blending, mood, and scale proving an essential part of the creative process. It helped foster individuality in each music piece while maintaining a unified theme for the entire album. Not just confined to ambient music, the album is an exciting blend of numerous other genres.
It rather appeared to be ironic when their work got labeled as ‘Loud Ambient,’ diverting from the initial title ‘Rothko’ project. This name originated from the constant banter shared among the group members. They found humor in the misconception that their band only crafts ambient music.
Never before had their tracklisting remained unaltered, with the content of the album falling into place seamlessly. The confidence emanating from the group regarding ‘Loud Ambient’ has been the strongest since their inception. The album, meant to get their listeners grooving, denotes the band’s resurgence to the dance floor. This invitation to join them has been extended to their fans with much anticipation.
