When the forces of Acid Jazz legends Chris Bangs and Mick Talbot come together, the music world takes note. Following their astounding reception to their 2022 offering, Back To Business, they’re now back on the scene with their fresh new work titled ‘Smokin’ Aces’. The album, set to be launched on January 23rd, brings together the best traditions of Acid Jazz and modern fusion styles, as the pair have previously worked with.

Looking back in their partnership, Bangs and Talbot have a longstanding bond with the Acid Jazz Records, a renowned record label based in East London that has been fostering creative output since the late 80s. Known for taking risks, the label released its initial single with Galliano and later introduced the Brand New Heavies and Jamiroquai to the world. In the same vein, their nurturing of Bangs & Talbot’s talent is set to continue breaking the established norms.

It has been an intense journey for both musicians to finally reach Smokin’ Aces. Bangs, residing in Southern Spain, and Talbot in London, exchanged track ideas and keyboard demos over WhatsApp. The goal was to retain the human touch in all their tracks, contrary to an industry shifting towards AI. The organic feel certainly pulses through the music, keeping the groove of a live band intact, yet bringing a contemporary flair.

But the album is not just a Bangs & Talbot affair. Musicians and vocalists from the Americas, Africa, Asia, and all across Europe have lent their talents, adding layers of richness to the 12 songs in the album. Their collaboration brings forth a fascinating aural experience that can best be described as Retrophonic, showcasing a blend of vintage musical styles with a modern twist. The work is a testament to the duo’s ability to navigate through diverse musical genres while still keeping Acid Jazz at its core.

Acid Jazz Records, true to its ethos, has provided a conducive atmosphere for Bangs & Talbot to explore and innovate. The label has a storied history of supporting an array of genres from soul, mod, to northern soul. Artists like Gloria Scott, The Style Council vocalist Dee C. Lee, and UK jazz group Nimbus Sextet have added to its diverse talent pool. Acid Jazz Records’ ability to generate fresh vibes with every collaboration stands highlighted with Smokin’ Aces.

Significant releases by soul-singer Leroy Hutson including Positive Forces, eclectic song choices by Eddie Piller and Martin Freeman, and the resurrection of Corduroy all signal at a versatile portfolio. Even the club scene was not untouched, Acid Jazz Records owner Piller having bought Blue Note night club in the 90s, further celebrating and promoting the label’s music.

These past and present narratives of Acid Jazz Records will undoubtedly be transformed with Smokin’ Aces. The anticipation is palpable. As Talbot puts it, “The album is kind of Retrophonic, but also, Contemporary at the same time. Its got the groove of a live band…” The world awaits, ready to groove to the fresh beats in 2026. As both Bangs & Talbot, and Acid Jazz Records demonstrate, the beat of innovation fused with tradition never indeed stops.
