Hidden Orchestra, the solo studio project of producer/composer Joe Acheson, has released a mesmerizing track titled “Little Buddy Move” on his newly formed Lone Figures imprint. This unique piece of music is a captivating fusion of live elements and sampled percussive sounds, drawing inspiration from a giant puppet performance in Scotland. The original track was combined with the HAPI drum, synth work, and creatively crafted beats primarily from sound effects.
The track’s title, “Little Buddy Move,” references a clicking sound recorded in Berlin by sound designer Ali Tocher. This mechanical figurine’s movement sound serves as the foundation for an intricately woven soundscape that takes listeners on a journey of pulsing grooves and organic, electronic downtempo vibes. Tocher’s unconventional and sourced sounds, such as using an oven door banging as a snare drum and recording a kitchen blender’s motor with a sensor to pick up electrical activity, add a distinct and unexpected flavor to the composition.
Hidden Orchestra has gained recognition through multiple albums released under the respected independent label Tru Thoughts. Their unique blend of classical and electronic styles with acoustic instruments, drums, field recordings, and natural sounds has garnered support from prominent media outlets like The Guardian, BBC6Music, FIP, and JazzFM. Their music is an engaging interplay of complex and simple elements, creating a mesmerizing blend of IDM, classical, dub, electronica, folk, post-rock, hip-hop, jazz, and more.
The solo studio project has also earned a devoted global following through their energetic and intriguing live shows. These shows feature a core quartet band and guest musicians from diverse musical backgrounds. The addition of the live audiovisual show by Lumen brings an extra layer of spectacle to their performances.
