The Fall, formed in 1976, has had an impressive and chaotic history, going through numerous lineup changes and releasing multiple albums and singles. Throughout it all, the constant driving force behind the band has been their leader and vocalist, Mark Edward Smith. The Fall’s music is known for its obscure brilliance and its defiance against mediocrity and the status quo.

In 1990, The Fall signed to Fontana, which marked a significant change for the band. Guitarist Martin Bramah, one of the original founders of the group, re-joined the band, replacing Smith’s ex-wife Brix. Despite signing to a major label, The Fall’s evolution was not seen as a sell-out move. The three albums released under Fontana, namely Extricate, Shift-Work, and Code: Selfish, showcased The Fall’s consistent and unique sound. During this period, the band worked as a four-piece, with Craig Scanlon on guitar, Steve Hanley on bass, and Simon ‘Funky Si’ Wolstencroft on drums.

The album Shift-Work, released in April 1991, stands out as a commercial success for The Fall. With standout tracks like “Idiot Joy Showland,” a scathing criticism of the popular Madchester bands at the time, and “The War Against Intelligence,” the album displayed a strong and varied musical range. Additionally, the song “Edinburgh Man” served as a testament to Mark E. Smith’s affection for his adopted home city. The Fall’s unique and influential sound has set them apart from other related artists who emerged during the same era.

Related artists during The Fall’s prime include influential post-punk bands like Joy Division, The Cure, and Gang of Four. These bands also challenged conventions and pushed boundaries within the music industry. However, The Fall’s distinct sound and Mark E. Smith’s unparalleled vocals have solidified their position as one of the most innovative and enduring bands of their time.
