Queens of the Stone Age brought their headlining tour to Forest Hills Stadium in Queens on Saturday (8/12) to promote their new album In Times New Roman. Despite the outdoor venue’s strict 10 PM curfew, the band had an 8 PM set time. The opening act, The Armed, took the stage at 6 PM and, despite the early slot and the band’s relative obscurity to QOTSA fans, delivered a high-energy performance that included songs from their anticipated new album Perfect Saviors and their ULTRAPOP era. The crowd showed their appreciation and cheered the band on throughout their set.
Next up was Phantogram, who played an atmospheric and moody set of synth rock, including a new song. Sarah Barthel’s energetic stage presence added an exciting dynamic to their performance.
After the sun set, Queens of the Stone Age took the stage, kicking off their set with their 2002 hit “No One Knows.” The band kept the energy levels high throughout, delivering one hit after another. Despite not having a recent hit as big as their mid-2000s peak popularity era songs, QOTSA’s diehard fanbase and commitment to quality control ensured a consistently great set. Songs from their 2013 album Like Clockwork are starting to feel like classics, and the new album tracks held their own alongside fan favorites.
Lead singer Josh Homme’s occasional drunken stage banter may have been distracting, but the band’s tightness and musical prowess made up for it. Even during lengthier improvisations like “Make It Wit Chu” (which featured crowd interaction and a tease of The Rolling Stones’ “Miss You”) and the nine-minute epic “Straight Jacket Fitting,” the band didn’t miss a beat.
The set ended on a high note, with two more of their biggest hits, “Little Sister” and “Go With the Flow,” followed by an explosive performance of the set-ending “A Song for the Dead.” The latter even inspired a circle pit, the only one witnessed that night.
Queens of the Stone Age delivered a memorable and energetic performance that showcased their career-spanning hits and their ability to captivate audiences. Check out the photo gallery below for a glimpse of the band in action.
