Ekiti Sound’s upcoming release, ‘Drum Money’, promises to be a hit with fans of diverse musical styles. The London and Lagos-based producer and vocalist has crafted a 17-track album that blends Afrobeat, house, and hip-hop into a seamless fusion. With assistance from live musicians – including an Afrobeat horn section, percussion and keys – as well as bass from Metronomy’s Olugbenga Adelekan, Ekiti Sound has created his most audacious work yet.
The lead single, ‘The Chairman’, features Yoruba vocals from Aunty Rayzor and is an electronic Afrojuju masterpiece. ‘Drum Money’ continues with the jazzy hip-hop rhythms of the album’s title track and ‘Ghost Leader’, as well as the bass-heavy ‘Ebi Pa Mi’ and ‘Fuji On One’. The album is certain to appeal to both home listeners and DJs looking for festival floor-fillers.
Fans of Ekiti Sound will be eagerly anticipating the release of ‘Drum Money’ on June 23, especially after hearing the preview track, ‘Ku Ise’. This percussive number, featuring vocals from Debbie Ohiri, is a modern take on a traditional Ekiti folk song. The song is a driving, bouncy tune that showcases the album’s enormous bass growls and wriggly arpeggios.
Ekiti Sound spoke about the significance of the track, saying, “‘GOD BLESS THE WORK WE DO’: The lyrics are like the unofficial national anthem of Ekiti State. Having worked with Debbie Ohiri on my first album, we wanted to create another moment that held significance for the paternal side. From school kids to grandmothers, they all know the words to this. For me, it was amazing to take one of our oldest folk songs and give it a modern electronic take while still keeping the stirring emotions of ancestral pride and thumping club energy. What Ekiti Sound is foundationally built in.”
With the release of ‘Drum Money’ on the horizon, it’s clear that Ekiti Sound has crafted an essential album that fans of diverse genres will enjoy. Pre-order the album now to experience Ekiti Sound’s fusion of Afrobeat, house, and hip-hop.
