In his latest musical endeavor, KÖLSCH explores the profound moments of his adolescent years, presenting “1989” – the third installment in his autobiographical series. This latest album follows predecessors “1977” and “1983,” delving deep into the pivotal year marked by personal challenges, notably his parents’ divorce and the complexities of puberty.
Yet, contrary to its melancholic background, “1989” radiates an immersive tapestry of emotive techno, echoing the sound palettes of legends like DJ Koze and Moderat. Tracks like “In Bottles,” graced by Aurora’s vocals, evoke powerful emotional responses, carrying listeners on a poignant journey.
While there’s a recurrence of the title “Grey” throughout, “1989” is anything but monochromatic. The album shimmers with sonic depth and richness. Adding a majestic layer to the album’s soundscape, the 24-piece Heritage Orchestra, steered by Gregor Schwellenbach, amplifies tracks such as “Khairo,” “Liath,” and “Serji,” taking them to orchestral heights.
KÖLSCH’s “1989” stands as a testament to the transformative power of music, metamorphosing personal tribulations into a universal, soul-stirring techno experience.
