Zbigniew Preisner’s influential soundtrack to Krzysztof Kieslowski’s ‘La Double Vie De Veronique’ is making a comeback on vinyl. This record is a transcendent masterpiece, devoid of sentimental and overly produced heartstring-pulling. If you haven’t seen the film yet, I highly recommend you do so immediately. However, even without the visual experience, this score showcases Preisner’s exceptional talent. From the mystical choral pieces of ‘Van Den Budenmayer’ to the delicate and melancholic solo piano composition of ‘Les Marionnettes,’ and the somber and mournful energy of the ‘Theme’ works, this soundtrack is Preisner at his best.
Renowned cinematographer Slawomir Idziak utilized various shades of yellow filters to create an unreal atmosphere in the film, and this translates flawlessly into the score. In my opinion, it is an outstanding example of modern composition that belongs alongside the works of Goran Bregović for Emir Kusturica, Alberto Iglesias for Julio Medem’s films, and Nikos Mamangakis’ expansive compositions for the Heimat films. This vinyl reissue is a must-have for any music lover.
