ANOHNI and the Johnsons have released a music video for their latest single “Why Am I Alive Now?” The song is taken from their upcoming album “My Back Was a Bridge For You to Cross,” which is set to be released this Friday via Secretly Canadian and Rough Trade. The video was directed by Hunter Schafer and explores the theme of finding sisterhood in a world that offers no assistance.

Schafer, who is also known for her role in the hit TV series “Euphoria,” expressed her excitement about directing the video, stating that ANOHNI’s music has been a significant influence since her high school days. She wanted the video to address the question that the song raises and convey the idea of seeking sisterhood in a world that offers no support.

ANOHNI has also announced an upcoming YouTube experience, scheduled for tomorrow. The event will include a live performance, an early premiere playback of the album, and a conversation between ANOHNI and Schafer. Fans can visit ANOHNI’s YouTube channel to join in.

“My Back Was a Bridge For You to Cross” is ANOHNI’s first album since 2016’s “HOPELESSNESS” and the first to be released under the ANOHNI and the Johnsons name since 2010’s “Swanlights.” The album was produced by soul producer Jimmy Hogarth and features a backing band comprised of Leo Abrahams, Chris Vatalaro, Sam Dixon, and string arranger Rob Moose.

ANOHNI draws inspiration from Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” for this album and aims to address global and environmental concerns, much like the iconic album did over 50 years ago. Many of the songs on the album were recorded in a single take, capturing the raw emotions and thoughts of the moment.

ANOHNI hopes that her music can provide a soundtrack for activism and empower listeners in their work and decision-making. She wants the album to be useful and help others navigate these challenging times with dignity and resilience.
