Lisbon-based band Beautify Junkyards returns with their third album, “Nova,” under the Ghost Box label. This release marks a significant evolution in their sound, blending ethereal vocals and rich, melodic songwriting with a more electronic and experimental edge.
The band’s lineup, featuring João Branco Kyron and new vocalist Martinez, is augmented by Bernard Loopkin’s contemporary sound design. The addition of synths and electronics enriches the group’s texture, drawing on influences from 60s and 70s movie soundtracks, library music, and vintage electronica. The album’s sonic landscape evokes the eclectic sounds of artists like White Noise, Piero Umiliani, Mort Garson, and Broadcast.
Despite its electronic elements, “Nova” retains a deeply human touch. Antonio Watts’ drumming and percussion provide a hypnotic foundation, while the bass and guitars of Sergue and João Moreira weave intricate patterns that give the music a sinuous, organic feel.
The album’s lyrics delve into surreal and abstract dreamscapes, inspired by situationism, Dadaism, cut-up techniques, and the psychedelic imagination. This thematic richness is mirrored in Julian House’s design work for the album, which draws on the revolutionary underground press of 1960s Europe, adding a visually engaging layer to the project.
“Nova” is a testament to Beautify Junkyards’ ability to innovate while staying true to their roots, offering listeners a journey through a meticulously crafted auditory and visual world. This album not only expands their musical horizons but also solidifies their place in the avant-pop and electronic music scene.
