The Sound of Berlin label has once again showcased its commitment to promoting creativity and diversity in the electronic music scene in Germany with their latest compilation, “Berlin Undercover.” The album highlights the unique heritage and musical DNA of the Berlin scene and features the work of several emerging and established artists.

Since its inception in 2018, Sound of Berlin has been a platform for some of the most exciting talents in the industry. The label has released a plethora of electronic music tracks by artists such as Juan Atkins, Dr. Motte, and Dimitri Hegemann. Additionally, in the same year, Sound of Berlin produced the documentary of the same name that explores the history of the famous techno and club scene in Berlin. The film features interviews from several notable DJs and cultural figures, including Monolink, who later co-founded the Sound of Berlin label in 2020.

This month, Sound of Berlin presents “Berlin Undercover,” which focuses on the musical origins of the complex sonic mosaic that defines the Berlin sound. For this project, Sound of Berlin invited ten artists to select a track that deeply influenced them and to reinterpret it in their style. The new versions of these tracks cover four decades of music, featuring rock progressions from the ’70s to downtempo from the 2000s, to the new wave of the ’80s and trance from the ’90s. The reimagined tracks explore genres like techno, deep house, electro-funk, synth-pop, and groove.

The album opens with a cover of Mike Oldfield‘s 1973 prog-rock hit “Tubular Bells.” The enthralling indie-dance duo CYRK (Sammy Goossens and Pascal Hetzel) reinterprets this classic track from the ’70s. In the ’80s, New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle” became a synth-pop classic, and the Hong Kong-born producer BB Deng covers the song for the album, creating a melancholic and ethereal version. Meanwhile, the Canadian artist Marc Houle revamps Steve Poindexter‘s “Computer Madness” track from 1989, breathing new life into the song with an ultra-electric beat.

Sound of Berlin’s “Berlin Undercover” compilation is a testament to the enduring legacy of Berlin’s unique and innovative electronic music scene. The album provides an excellent listening experience for techno fans and other music enthusiasts. By showcasing the diverse influences, styles, and talents that the Berlin scene has produced in the past four decades, Sound of Berlin is cementing its position as one of the most influential and forward-thinking labels today.
