The ambient music world is in mourning following the loss of a pioneer. The news regarding Brian McBride’s passing was confirmed earlier by Kranky, the duo’s long-associated record label. A heartfelt statement was shared by Adam Wiltzie, McBride’s bandmate and friend, stating, “I am deeply saddened to tell everyone that Brian McBride has passed away. I loved this guy & he will be missed.”
Formed in 1993, Stars Of The Lid, comprised of Brian McBride and Adam Wiltzie, carved a niche within ambient music’s sphere. Although they operated primarily on the peripheries of mainstream success, their impact on the music world was substantial. The duo’s emotive compositions have left an indelible mark on multiple genres, inspiring everyone from titans of post-rock to avant-garde techno producers.
Their musical journey began with their debut album, ‘Music For Nitrous Oxide’, in 1995, a culmination of two years of meticulous work. Their oeuvre continued to expand, culminating in 2007 with ‘And Their Refinement Of The Decline’. Sadly, this would be their last studio offering.
Live performances by Stars Of The Lid were a rarity, making them all the more memorable for those fortunate to witness. One such performance in 2015, at the Ukranian Federation in Montreal, remains etched in this writer’s memory. The group’s languid melodies created an atmosphere that lingered long after the last note had been played.
Tributes have been flowing, highlighting the impact of McBride on fellow musicians. Pan American’s Mark Nelson shared poignant memories of their early encounters with McBride and Wiltzie: “We met Brian and Adam in Houston sometime around 1990. In thrift store jackets 3 sizes too small and drinking red wine in a Mexican restaurant, we recognized them right away. Perhaps I should say we recognized ourselves.”
Nelson continued to recount moments, both humorous and nostalgic, culminating in a recent incident wherein a faux collaboration between him and Brian appeared on Spotify. Nelson reminisced, “A last opportunity for me to share his gentle pessimism and humor.”
As the music community reflects on the profound legacy left by Brian McBride, his influence on the ambient genre and beyond remains undeniable. He was not just a musician but an innovator who touched the lives of many with his profound sonic narratives.
