Hailing from London in 1987, Lush broke into the music scene with an ensemble featuring Miki Berenyi, Emma Anderson, Steve Rippon, and Chris Acland. Their innovative approach and the unique combination of heavy guitars and subdued vocals positioned them in the early wave of the “shoegazing” label, a term coined to define a genre marked by the layering of guitars, effects, and introspective lyrics. Amid this era of strong musical influences such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Cocteau Twins, and My Bloody Valentine, Lush made a name for itself with memorable albums like ‘Spooky’, ‘Split’, and ‘Lovelife’.
However, the band’s first impression to the world was their debut compilation album, ‘Gala’, released in 1990. This seminal piece of work was a combination of their earliest releases, ‘Scar’, ‘Mad Love’, and ‘Sweetness and Light’, and included a surprising cover of ABBA’s “Hey Hey Helen” and an extended mix of ‘Scarlet’ from ‘Scar’. Targeted at the US and Japanese markets, the album’s 35th anniversary in 2025 was celebrated with a grand reissue, featuring both Standard LP/CD and a Deluxe Edition Coloured Vinyl.
Despite the tragic and untimely death of Acland which led to the disbanding of the group in 1996, the band retained a loyal fan base, fueling a brief reunion from 2015 to 2016, with Berenyi, Anderson, King, and newcomer Justin Welch. Even though this reunion was short-lived, it proved the timeless relevance of their music and cemented Lush’s place in rock music history.
The mark of Lush’s impact on music history was brought into the limelight with the remastering of ‘Gala’ 35 years after its release. This anniversary issue was undoubtedly a pleasing moment for music lovers and marked a milestone in the discography of Lush. The standard and deluxe editions were further elevated with 2025 Kevin Vanbergen remasters of the original tracklist, and deluxe edition artwork recreated by Chris Bigg featuring original artwork by v23 (Vaughan Oliver and Chris Bigg). The band’s evolution and historical significance were beautifully captured in a new biography penned by Jenny Hval. Furthermore, fans had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Lush musical experience with exclusive merchandise offerings.
In their heyday, Lush shared the stage with other notable bands like Ride, making them contemporaries of bands like the Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine. These interactions and their unique musical style undoubtedly influenced the trajectory of these artists, showcasing the interconnectedness of the music industry.
Marking the 35th Anniversary of ‘Gala’ isn’t just a celebration of Lush’s discography but a moment of reflection on a glorious era of rock music. The legacy of Lush, etched in history with successful albums like ‘Gala’, reminds us of the band’s significant influence and the enduring appeal of their music.
