Embracing the challenge of working with limited tools—a single synth and live drums—the duo found boundless creativity within constraints. Each of the six tracks on “Yucca” is built around rhythmic ratios derived from the Fibonacci sequence, mirroring the spiraling structures found in nature. From the dynamic energy of “Chirp” to the hypnotic ebb and flow of “Ferns,” the mini-album invites listeners on a journey through evolving sonic landscapes.
Maintaining a sense of bounce amid intricate phrasing, Davies’ percussive practice is inspired by a diverse range of influences, from jazz legends like Roy Haynes to traditional drumming styles from Senegal and South India. Meanwhile, Andrews draws from his background in hip-hop and electronic music, channeling the minimalism of Terry Riley and the dub techno aesthetic.
Recorded in Lewisham during the spring and summer of 2023, “Yucca” follows the duo’s previous release, “Axis,” and showcases their dynamic evolution as artists. As the third release on Odda Recordings, “Yucca” solidifies the label’s commitment to pushing the boundaries between organic and synthetic sounds.
