Have you ever tried playing an album that’s too unpredictable, or even hazardous, but ultimately too irresistible to resist? Well, that’s the running joke between my dear friend Dave Hargrove and me whenever we’d chat about Danny Brown’s latest releases. A touch NSFW, yes, but oh, so worth the adventure!

The name Danny Brown might ring a bell for modern fans from “The Danny Brown Podcast.” Yet, this only scratches the surface of this Detroit-born talent. Set to grace the Vanguard stage this Sunday, Brown’s journey from underground prodigy to mainstream sensation has been a sight to behold. The intensity of his original fans is palpable, rivaled only by the admiration of Central Florida’s rap virtuoso, Kitty (formerly known as Kitty Pryde).

Danny’s musical journey began with a bang in Detroit in 1981. By the time he released his first two albums consecutively, the rap world was already abuzz with his name. His recent masterpiece, the sixth album titled Quaranta, is a testament to his lasting influence.

March saw him join forces with the prolific New York rapper, JPEGMafia, unveiling the mixtape Scaring the Hoes. With JPEGMafia set to open for Brown at Vanguard, fans are in for a double treat. Since 2016, JPEGMafia has dropped an impressive two mixtapes and four albums, with LP! from 2021 as his most recent gem. For enthusiasts of innovative indie rap, this duo represents the pinnacle of contemporary artistry.
