Dead Oceans Presents: A Musical Odyssey

Pack those bags, because the recent releases from Dead Oceans are a ticket to a journey unlike any other.

The adventure begins with a cosmic journey filled with ethereal wonders, stardust, and a touch of romantic melancholy. This is none other than the stunning new double single release from Mitski, “Star” b/w “Heaven”. It’s an experience that words cannot do justice – it’s a must-listen and must-watch, given the visualizers that accompany the tracks.

After the recent release of her lead single, “Bug Like An Angel”, Mitski continues to captivate with two new singles from her upcoming album, ‘The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We’. “Star” and “Heaven” are the latest additions to the Mitski universe, each distinct yet complementary. “Star” features an alien lift inspired by Scott Walker, building to stunning vocals from Mitski, while “Heaven” follows with a Patsy Cline swing and old Hollywood vibes. The tracks were brought to life with the help of arranger and conductor Drew Erickson and a full orchestra at Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles.

Mitski also announced a series of intimate acoustic performances in the UK and Europe as part of the ‘Amateur Mistake’ series in October, with special guest Trust Fund. Exclusive presale access to the shows is available with all pre-orders through Mitski’s UK/EU online shop, including existing pre-orders.

The journey then descends from the cosmos into more familiar territory with Toro y Moi’s latest EP, ‘Sandhills’. It’s a vivid and personal exploration of his hometown, Columbia, South Carolina, complemented by a short film featuring members of his community. This project is a reminder of the deep connections that places can forge in one’s soul.

The album art for ‘Sandhills’ is created by Ernest Lee, also known as Chicken Man. Directed by Steve Daniels, the accompanying film takes Toro y Moi, aka Chaz Bear, on a journey back to his roots in South Carolina. It is a poignant letter to his hometown, but also a bittersweet realization that returning home is never quite the same. The project is a personal narrative of his homecoming, reminiscent of Sufjan Stevens’ ‘Seven Swans’ or Karen O’s work on the ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ soundtrack. The folk-pop tracks have an easy, rhythmic vibe that harkens back to the early days of Toro y Moi. ‘Sandhills’ signifies another step in Bear’s musical evolution, reinventing himself with each new creation.

Bright Eyes is celebrating the third anniversary of their latest album, ‘Down In The Weeds, Where the World Once Was’, with the release of the Eve Maret remix of “Pan and Broom”. Maret’s remix adds brightness with digital synths and electronic textures while preserving the song’s core elements. Revisit the original album, listen to the remix, and catch Bright Eyes on tour in Australia this fall.
