Born in the heart of Paris, France, Makaya McCraven was exposed to the whimsical world of music at a young age, carved by the influence of his jazz drummer father and folk singing Hungarian mother. The early onset of his drumming practice put him at the forefront of his father’s drum ensemble at merely five years old. His progression in the world of music was unique: forming a jazz-hip hop group, Cold Duck Complex, during his high school years, and studying music at the University of Massachusetts. Moving to the beat of his own drum, the young prodigy migrated to Chicago in 2007, where he had the opportunity to share the stage with esteemed musicians such as Bobby Broom, Corey Wilkes, and Marquis Hill.

Influenced by the diverse music scene in Chicago, McCraven dived into a new genre, blending jazz with hip-hop, rock, and global rhythms to create a unique fusion of sounds. His first full-length album, In the Moment, released in 2015, the year when he began working on the album In These Times which was later released in September 2022. Their distinct genres and rhythms showcased McCraven’s exceptional skill in melding and juxtaposing contrasting styles. With a creative trajectory pointing upwards, McCraven released more music, experimenting with universal rhythms and left-field beats, and collaborating with other established artists like Kamasi Washington.

In 2025, McCraven announced a four-part musical project consisting of four interconnected EPs – Techno Logic, The People’s Mixtape, Hidden Out!, and PopUp Shop, not just content to create soundscapes but a tangible testament to his creative and communal expression of music. All of these were put together in a 2xLP and 2xCD physical release, subtly named Off the Record. Although the music creation process involved extensive post-production, editing, and overdubbing, he still managed to retain the raw, organic feeling of the tracks.

Off the Record is not just a musical compilation but a testament to McCraven’s experimental prowess, his ability to challenge conventional genre boundaries, and his keen sense of communal interconnectedness. His production expertise, blend of different music styles and the profound narrative behind each track, truly sets the bar high within the contemporary music scene. In the words of Makaya McCraven, this record captures the “dreamlike alteration” of energy uniquely found in musical gatherings.

McCraven’s musical journey is emblematic of his constant drive to innovate and push boundaries. Apart from his projects, his contribution to the music industry was recognized in 2020’s DownBeat Critics Poll, where he emerged victoriously in the “Rising Star” categories for Best Producer and Best Drummer. Constructively challenging the traditional constructs of music and rhythm, Makaya McCraven, without doubt, has left an indelible mark on the world of music.
