Metronomy delights fans with their latest single, “Nice Town,” accompanied by the exciting news of their signing to Ninja Tune. This collaboration with New York’s Pan Amsterdam marks the first glimpse of Metronomy’s upcoming project, following their ‘Posse EP Volume 1,’ which showcased collaborations with rising talents such as Biig Piig, Spill Tab, Sorry, Brian Nasty, and Folly Group.
Founder and lead songwriter Joe Mount explains the collaborative process, stating, “My collaborations always start out the same way. I send out a folder of ideas, beats mainly, and see what comes back.” Mount reflects on the seamless synergy with Pan Amsterdam, highlighting the track’s fusion of old-school rap elements with Pan Amsterdam’s unique flair as a jazz trumpeter, who has also worked with the likes of Iggy Pop.
“Nice Town” delves into personal introspection, with Pan Amsterdam sharing, “It deals with my own battles, with the internal versus the external or, intangible versus the tangible.” The track navigates the complexities of inner conflict and the allure of external distractions, encapsulating the dichotomy between the tangible and intangible aspects of existence.
Following the collaborative spirit of their previous EP, “Nice Town” reaffirms Metronomy’s commitment to working with emerging talents. Mount expresses his excitement for discovering and collaborating with artists at this stage in their careers, fostering a creative environment that is both inspiring and dynamic.
For Mount, signing with Ninja Tune is a significant milestone, evoking a sense of nostalgia for labels like Ninja Tune, Warp, and Wall of Sound, which played a formative role in shaping his musical identity as a teenager. He acknowledges Ninja Tune’s enduring success and resilience in an ever-evolving industry, paralleling the trajectory of Metronomy’s own journey.
With “Nice Town,” Metronomy and Pan Amsterdam invite listeners on a journey of sonic exploration and introspection, blending genres and perspectives to create a captivating musical experience. As they embark on this new chapter with Ninja Tune, the future looks bright for both Metronomy and their fans alike.
