Toronto-born, Copenhagen-based artist Nathan Micay has been on quite the run these past few years. His debut EP on esteemed label AD93 (formerly Whities) in 2018, ‘First Casualty,’ became one of the biggest hits of the dance music circuit, gaining acclaim on best-of-year lists from Resident Advisor, Mixmag, and DJ Mag. He followed this up in 2019 with his debut album, ‘Blue Spring,’ on LUCKYME®. The album became a landmark release that effortlessly brought together the sounds of trance, electronica, and techno, placing them under the roof of the avant-garde. The release received wide acclaim, prominently featured on many end-of-year lists, this time in dance music and beyond. The supplemental EP release, “Butterfly Arcane,” saw him double down on the dancefloor.
As a DJ, he has continued to make his mark on the international club circuit, establishing himself as a regular at key venues such as Berghain Berlin, Fabric London, Contact Tokyo, and Goodroom NYC. However, in 2020, Nathan truly arrived, offering two bodies of work that nobody saw coming: in May 2020, he surprise-released the album ‘The World I’m Going to Hell For,’ created entirely with string instruments and limited electronics. Pitchfork called it “Uniquely powerful,” offering fans and listeners alike a new window into Nathan’s growing artistic vision. The album expanded on his cinematic sound and perfectly positioned for the natural move into scoring.
He then spent two years working on his biggest project yet: a full symphonic hybrid score for the hit BBC/HBO series Industry. The series and his music have received acclaim from The Independent, Vox, The New York Times, and The Hollywood Reporter. He was quickly commissioned for the second series and released the follow-up in December 2023. Nathan also scored the Netflix sci-fi series The Last Bus and HBO’s forthcoming Sydney Sweeney feature Reality.
In this period of rapid evolution from DJ to composer, Nathan Micay has plowed everything he’s garnered into his anticipated new full-length, ‘To The God Named Dream,’ out Aug 4th on LUCKYME®. Nathan Micay presents ‘To The God Named Dream’ – a haunted library record in the large language age. Expanding his music beyond clubs has proven a revelation for Micay – synthesizing score, downtempo & dance music into an essential album of 2023. Following on from his work on the award-winning HBO series Industry and critically acclaimed 2023 album ‘To The God Named Dream,’ Nathan Micay continues his stellar scoring work with his first feature film Reality, starring Sydney Sweeney.
