Oliver Night, a DJ, producer, and multi-instrumentalist based in London, collaborated with renowned artist Roots Manuva to create a genre-defying masterpiece, Between The Lines, in 2025. This album uncovers Oliver’s artistic development, incorporating a fusion of exciting rhythms, appealing harmonies, and soothing sound textures. British rapper Roots Manuva’s track ‘Boss’ is a highlight of the album, delivering a potent message of authenticity. Night’s music journey traces back to his uncle Hughie Izachaar, a reggae artist who sparked his interest in music with his first guitar.
Gabbing his first professional experience with DnB tracks in Germany, Oliver Night later developed his hybrid style incorporating influences of hip-hop, broken beat, house music, soul, and jazz in London. This London-based artist had earlier ties with Roots Manuva through Banana Klan, and has made appearances in global events and platforms including Glastonbury, Tate Modern, Boiler Room and Rinse FM. Night’s collaborations range from artists like Quiet Dawn, Marcel Vogel, Natasha Diggs to platforms like CoOp Presents. His efforts have also been recognised by Bolting Bits and Music Is My Sanctuary, validating his significant contribution to the evolving genres of bruk and soul.
The album ‘Between The Lines’ transcends a traditional single-genre album and exemplifies his flawless blend of deep-seated UK sound system influences with cutting-edge production trends. It comprises 12 tracks, each featuring different artists sharing a unique layer of creative energy, including KAYA FYAH, David Mrakpor, and Jay Phelps. The album’s focus track, ‘Boss’, re-teams Night and Roots Manuva delivering an undeviating message to maintain one’s identity.
Alongside these tracks, the album includes singles like ‘Run Like The River’ which is an emotional call for freedom and self-belief featuring artist TREV, and ‘Friends’ which carries a tribute to Night’s shared African heritage with KAYA FYAH. Track ‘The City’ delivers a jam-session feel with Jay Phelps on the trumpet, Timmy boom bap on drums, and Sam Leak on keys. “Between The Lines” stands out with an indie-band vibe which Night wanted to be perceived beyond face value.
Among the many commendable tracks on the album, standout ‘Trance End’ features David Mrakpor and ventures into psychedelic jazz realms by incorporating tuba and live drums, contributing to the trance-like theme that Night was aiming to depict. His debut album ‘Between The Lines’ signals his emergence as a pioneer in the bruk and soul music landscape, building a reputation for himself with a set of tracks demonstrating communal and musical instincts.
Oliver Night‘s style resists conformity. His music ranges in mood and genre, from broken rhythm, hip-hop sensibility, house texture, and jazzy grooves to name a few. Despite these genre alterations, a recognizable ‘Ollie groove’ binds the music together. This multi-genre exploration is apparent in Night’s debut album, ‘Between The Lines’, signifying his versatility and forward-thinking approach to the current musical landscape.
