Max Roach

Max Roach’s dynamic fusion of jazz, hard bop, and free jazz cements his legacy as a pioneering force in percussion and composition. Revered in vinyl circles, his work spans iconic albums like “Brown and Roach Incorporated” (1955) and “New Sounds” (1952), showcasing his innovative rhythms and profound musicality. Collaborations with jazz luminaries are captured in “Bird – Diz – Bud – Max” volumes from 1953, highlighting his seamless integration with the likes of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Released under labels that have become synonymous with jazz excellence, these recordings are essential listening for any serious collector. Roach’s influence resonates alongside contemporaries such as Charles Mingus, with whom he recorded “The Charles Mingus Quintet + Max Roach” in 1955. Despite the tragic loss of some works in the 2008 Universal fire, his enduring impact on the jazz scene remains undisputed.
