Teresa Taylor, renowned drummer for the Texas rock band Butthole Surfers, sadly passed away at the age of 60 after a long battle with end stage lung disease. Her contribution to the band’s success and her unique style made her an integral part of the Butthole Surfers story. Let’s take a closer look at her remarkable journey.

Born in Arlington, Texas, in 1962, Teresa Taylor, also known as Teresa Nervosa, found her passion for drumming at an early age. She joined Butthole Surfers in 1983, right after the release of their debut self-titled EP. Interestingly, Taylor and King Coffey, the band’s founding member and drummer, had played together in high school marching bands, leading to a fictionalized story that they were siblings.

During her time with Butthole Surfers (1983-1989, with a brief break), Taylor showcased her exceptional drumming skills on albums like “Psychic… Powerless… Another Man’s Sac,” “Rembrandt Pussyhorse,” “Locust Abortion Technician,” and “Hairway To Steven.” Her unique rhythms and percussion added depth and intensity to the band’s experimental sound, contributing to their status as Texas rock legends.

Following her departure from the band in 1989, Taylor settled in Austin and embarked on an acting career. In 1990, she had a memorable role in Richard Linklater‘s film, “Slacker,” where she portrayed the character “Pap Smear Pusher.” Despite her pursuits outside of music, her love for drumming drew her back to Butthole Surfers for a 2009 tour, further solidifying her connection with the band and its fanbase.

Teresa Taylor’s partner confirmed that she passed away clean and sober, peacefully in her sleep. Her courage and resilience in the face of her illness serve as an inspiration to many. Her passionate spirit and impeccable talent will forever be missed by those who had the privilege of knowing her. A memorial service to honor her memory will be held at a later date.

The music industry mourns the loss of Teresa Taylor, a legendary drummer and an influential figure in Butthole Surfers’ legacy. Her artistry and contributions to the band’s discography will continue to resonate with fans worldwide. As we remember Teresa Taylor, let us celebrate her life, her talent, and the profound impact she had on the rock music scene.
