With a sophomore album slated to reach the music racks on March 13, 2026, the Philly/NJ band, Sweet Pill is circling back in the music scene after a hiatus. The forthcoming album, titled “Still There’s a Glow”, is anticipated to conjure a fresh musical adventure, distinctively different from their critically acclaimed 2022 debut album, “Where The Heart Is”. The development and execution of this album illustrate the evolution of the ensemble and their significant expansion in musical expression.
Zayna Youssef, the lead vocalist of the band, plays an instrumental role in navigating the direction of the album. She deals candidly with her personal journey of confronting and overcoming depression, culminating in a record that is both introspective and inspiring. As she entered her thirties, the transformation she underwent helped shape the overall course of the album, creating a melodious mix of self-criticism, regretful introspection, and an endearing longing for self-improvement.
The band initially gained momentum as a creation borne out of a senior project by Youssef and guitarist Jayce Williams in 2018, during their tenure at the Rowan University. Later, drummer Chris Kearney, came on board, contributing significantly to the unique symphony of Sweet Pill. Following their debut single ‘Doubt’ in March 2019 and impactful EP, ‘Lost in It’, their journey took them to Philadelphia amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The move marked a significant turning point for the group as they gained two more members – guitarist Sean McCall, and bassist Ryan Cullen. Gradually, their music gained wider acceptance, setting up the stage for their 2022 album “Where the Heart Is”.
In the period leading to the creation of “Still There’s a Glow”, Sweet Pill garnered immense attention through various performances. They notably shared the stage with the post-hardcore band La Dispute during their US and Canada tour in 2022. Not long after in 2023, the band signed to Hopeless Records and unveiled the single ‘Starchild’. It was during this period that Youssef wrestled with her inner demons and came out triumphant, the experience of which greatly shaped the blueprint for the new album.
“No Control” is the captivating first single from “Still There’s a Glow”, reflecting the band’s evolved sound. It’s symbolic of the personal struggle Youssef underwent, and her acknowledgment of her lack of self-control and consequential recklessness it bred. Having faced feelings of unworthiness and dissatisfaction, she retrospectively echoes a charm of self-realization and self-improvement in this single. As she and the band prepares for March 2026, there is an expectant echo in the air, a momentous anticipation of a new era Sweet Pill is about the reveal.
References to other artists like Fall Out Boy and Panic! at the Disco subtly lacing their music, “Still There’s a Glow” is shaping up to bring a fresh perspective to the emo genre, promising a triumphant and liberating comeback from Sweet Pill.
