The Belair Lip Bombs, an indie quartet formed in 2017, have recently released their debut album, Lush Life, four years after their last EP. The album is a tale of self-discovery, self-awareness, and self-love, beautifully narrated through bouncy bass lines and captivating vocal harmonies. Comprising ten tracks written in 2021 by guitarist and vocalist Maisie Everett, the album explores themes of escapism, uncertainty, and longing, balanced with emotionally powerful vocals and catchy indie riffs.

The band, named after a set of vintage Cali skate wheels, was formed by Everett and her high school friend, guitarist Mike Bradvica. They were later joined by Liam De Bruin on drums and Jimmy Droughton on bass. Early support positions for bands like Tired Lion and British India helped establish them as notable rising stars in Frankston. Their journey was not without challenges, as they faced a stigma associated with being a ‘Frankston band.’ However, the inclusivity of the Melbourne scene has improved over the years, making it easier for them to break into local lineups.

Everett’s involvement with Melbourne punk act CLAMM led to meeting Nao Anzai, who mixed and mastered Lush Life. Anzai’s non-invasive approach and expertise made him the perfect fit for the project. The album features tracks like ‘Stay Or Go,’ which perfectly encapsulates its essence with rhythmic guitar pulses, unbridled bass riffs, and lyrics expressing doubt and desire. Another highlight is ‘Things That You Did,’ which showcases De Bruin’s articulate drumming and features Floodlights trumpeter Sarah Hellyer, the first-ever guest on a Lip Bombs track.

Everett’s determination for vocal perfection led to some recording sessions lasting up to 15 hours. This dedication is evident in tracks like ‘Easy On The Heart,’ where her harmonies create a powerful impact. The band’s thoughtful songwriting, catchy hooks, and meticulous production have resulted in a debut that sets a high standard for their contemporaries.

Although Lush Life showcases the Belair Lip Bombs’ potential for a bright future, Everett remains grounded, focusing on the present and working hard to seize upcoming opportunities. This approach, combined with their talent and dedication, positions the Belair Lip Bombs as a band to watch in the indie music scene.
