Neoteric age bore witness to a myriad of artistic expressions which includes the enigmatic emergence of The Mercury Program, an entity that manipulated the contours of the music scene. Their instrumental cocktail consisting of vibraphone, guitar, bass and drums became a unique signature of their vibe. Augmented by an atmospheric vitality, they were a quartet comprising Tom Reno, Whit Travisano, Sander Travisano and Dave Lebleu. Together they composed a rich tapestry of sounds in the late 1990s painting the towns across America with their experimental music.

The early years saw the band members spread out in different U.S. cities, yet their creative synergy remained untethered. 2000 witnessed them birthing ‘From the Vapors of Gasoline’, an ambitious project, that oozed their idiosyncratic sound throughout. Rather than cowering to the sophomore album curse, they belted out a transcendent collection of 10 powerfully dissonant tracks which swamped the listeners with an unexpected blend of new-age and post-hardcore genres, painting them a picture of an immersive suburban soundscape that spoke volumes of their creative audacity.

Remastered meticulously after a swathe of 25 years, ‘From the Vapors of Gasoline’ re-emerged from the vaults, striking with newfound invigoration. The auditory spectrum filled with thoughtful jams resonated profoundly with fans showing them that the sophomore slump was far from the band’s reality. Instead, it struck a chord with enthusiasts creating a vivid kaleidoscope of atmospheric colours that would disarm and enchant the listener, leaving no doubts about the undervalued triumph of this release.

The irony about creating a sonic masterpiece was that it did not feature vocals but instead took a detour, choosing to express through powerful instrumentals. This mesmerising feat amplified from their 2001 EP ‘All the Suits Began to Fall Off’, eliminating the need for lyrics entirely. This pivotal move paved the way for ‘A Data Learn The Language’, a critically appreciated assembly released in 2002 which subsequently strengthened as a double LP vinyl release in 2018.

The follow-up to this was a split EP named ‘Confines of Heat’ in 2003 post which the outfit embarked on a break, recharging their creative juices. Even amidst their intermittent workings, their seminal works echoed the halls of mainstream appreciation. As the years unfurled, the occasional break did not idle their unwavering dedication to creating music that spoke to the heart. Their fidelity stood the test of time with ‘Chez Viking’ in 2009, followed by ‘New Myths’ in 2016, sweeping across the musical landscape.

Channeling parallels to other instrumental virtuosity outfits such as This Is The Kit or Talking Heads, The Mercury Program crashed into the musical sphere with their own uniquely crafted sound. As they electrified the airwaves with ‘From the Vapors of Gasoline’, the band ensnared the listeners with their atmospheric colours, effectively etching their name in the hall of music fame. Their legacy underpinning the artistic melange that the new millennium witnessed, affirmed their position in the annals of memorable music.
