In a heartwarming homecoming, Toro y Moi unveils his latest EP, “Sandhills”, alongside a poignant short film that delves into his return to South Carolina. Both the EP and film are available for audiences, with the latter directed by Steve Daniels and released under the Dead Oceans label.
Chaz Bear, the creative mind behind Toro y Moi, collaborated on the film with producer Katherine Perry, a significant figure from his past – his high school photography teacher. Steve Daniels, the director, is another familiar face from Bear’s younger years in South Carolina. The film becomes even more personal with local artist Ernest Lee contributing the EP artwork, and the high-school football team showcased in the video being genuinely from the region.
Toro y Moi’s previous album, “Mahal”, graced listeners in May 2022 and was accompanied by a short film titled “Goes by So Fast”, featuring the renowned Eric André.
Chaz Bear’s “Sandhills” is not merely a new EP. It’s a reminiscent journey, a reconnection with one’s roots, and a celebration of where he comes from. The incorporation of familiar faces and local talents into the project amplifies its authenticity and provides listeners with a more intimate understanding of the artist’s background and influences.
