Matteo Capreoli, more commonly known by his pseudonym TTeo, is a fusion of German and Italian heritages. This singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer has deep roots in music that extend far beyond his own legacy.
In an unexpected twist of fate, TTeo’s father recently presented him with a cache of cassettes. These weren’t just any tapes but recordings of live performances from Lovexpress, his father’s band, dating back to the late 1970s. To TTeo’s astonishment, the quality and depth of the music were undeniably impressive. Recognizing the significance of these tracks, he immediately embarked on digitizing them. These recordings not only stand as historical mementos but have also become the foundation and muse for TTeo’s forthcoming album, “Lovexpress77.” Intriguingly, these are the sole known recordings of Lovexpress, a band that unfortunately never had the chance to record an official studio album.
“Follow Me,” the gospel-infused second single from the album, is a clear testament to TTeo’s commitment to preserving and reimagining Lovexpress’ legacy. To craft this song, he meticulously excavated samples from the original band’s repository, with a particular focus on the vocal and drum segments. The band’s leadership came from the Afro-American vocalist Joe Boston, whose voice harmonizes with Leo, the group’s bassist, on this track.
Though Lovexpress delved deep into American music, the lyrics sometimes become a challenge, particularly for listeners unfamiliar with Italian nuances. Such was the scenario with “Follow Me.” However, TTeo took this challenge head-on, deciphering the song’s essence and weaving in his own vocal layers. To enrich the chorus, singer-songwriter Kristine Bogan was brought into the fray, her voice amplifying the track’s soulful allure.
In “Lovexpress77,” TTeo not only pays homage to his father’s legacy but also offers listeners a unique blend of past and present, tradition and innovation. It’s a mesmerizing journey through time, and a testament to music’s enduring spirit.
