“Infinite Health,” the captivating sixth album by Tycho, the project led by San Francisco-based musician and producer Scott Hansen, is set for release on August 30. This much-anticipated record will be available via Mom + Pop Records in the U.S. and the legendary Ninja Tune label worldwide. The album’s announcement comes alongside the release of its lead single and accompanying video, “Phantom.”

Describing “Infinite Health,” Hansen reveals that the album is “about hope for the future and a requiem for the past.” He draws inspiration from the high-water mark scene in “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” where the protagonist reflects on his past, seeking meaning amidst chaos. Hansen envisions the album as a space for healing and reflection, a mantra for spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being. “At the end of the day, all we really have is our health – both physical and mental – and we wish infinite health to our family and friends,” he explains.

The album marks a return to a more electronic-centric production style for Hansen, with a focus on breaks, drums, and rhythmic elements. He emphasizes that the instrumentation follows the lead of these foundational elements, creating a cohesive and dynamic sound. This approach results in sparkling tracks, particularly evident in the lead single “Phantom,” which Hansen cites as his favorite on the album. The track features Tycho’s signature sound infused with Italo Disco influences, creating an iridescent, 80s-inspired vibe.

The video for “Phantom” was a collaborative effort with visual artist Ricardo Ponce, also known as Pixel Flux, who created the animations. Hansen himself edited and directed the video, which visually complements the track’s upbeat, neon noir aesthetics. The visual narrative explores themes of mortality and deeper understanding, with the phantom representing the ever-present specter of mortality.

Since its inception in 2001, Tycho has continually evolved under Hansen’s leadership, establishing a strong presence in the electronic music scene. The project has earned two GRAMMY nominations and collaborated with notable artists such as ODESZA, Maggie Rogers, Little Dragon, Leon Bridges, and Death Cab for Cutie. Following up on 2020’s “Simulcast” and 2019’s “Weather,” “Infinite Health” marks a new era for Tycho, retaining the familiar personnel of Zac Brown on guitar and Rory O’Connor on drums.

Hansen approached the recording process of “Infinite Health” with distinctiveness and concision as his artistic goals. He aimed to make the sound as different as possible while staying true to Tycho’s roots. This was partly achieved through an emphasis on the uptempo, danceable elements of Tycho’s music, with keen co-production by Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor. The album’s palette of chopped-up drums and warm, rounded guitars creates a unique sonic landscape.

“Infinite Health” stands as a testament to Hansen’s enduring creativity and Tycho’s evolving sound. The collaboration with Ninja Tune adds an extra layer of prestige to this release, promising a harmonious blend of Tycho’s signature style and the innovative spirit of the label. Set to release on August 30, the album invites listeners to embark on a journey of reflection and rejuvenation through its carefully crafted melodies and rhythms.

“Tycho’s ‘Infinite Health'” will be available on August 30th via Mom + Pop Records in the U.S. and Ninja Tune globally, offering a refreshing and updated world for fans of electronic music.
