Ugandan synth builder and producer, Brian Bamanya, aka Afrorack, has built Africa’s first DIY modular synthesizer, aptly named The Afrorack. Bamanya’s aim was to bring modular synthesis technology to Uganda, where it is difficult to acquire due to the lack of retailers and prohibitive costs. His debut album, “The Afrorack”, showcases his untethered creativity and restless energy, blending European and American musical styles with East African rhythms and scales to create hypnotic new sounds.
Influenced by the likes of Shackleton and Adrian Sherwood’s African Head Charge, Bamanya’s meditative compositions echo the psychedelic sounds of the past while introducing unique eccentricities. Additionally, Bamanya nods to the history of modular music with his approach to the kosmische universe of Popol Vuh, Klaus Schulze, and Emeralds, and amplifies it with East Africa’s idiosyncratic rhythmic intensity. “The Afrorack” is a testament to Bamanya’s talent as a producer and his determination to bring modular synthesis to new audiences.
