Following the success of his 2022 masterpiece, GOLD, Alabaster DePlume turned to the eclectic beats of London’s Total Refreshment Centre. The result is an album that’s as spontaneous as it’s deliberate, as candid as it’s orchestrated: Come With Fierce Grace.
The album’s creation process was nothing short of an intricate ballet. DePlume submerged his ensemble in a realm of ceaseless creation, weaving a sonic tapestry that exceeded the capacity of a single double LP. This surplus of material took on a life of its own in 2023, metamorphosing into an album that’s both an extension of and departure from its predecessor.
Instrumental for the most part, Come With Fierce Grace offers brief vocal sojourns with the likes of Momoko Gill (MettaShiba), Falle Nioke, and Donna Thompson. Yet, unlike the polished tones of DePlume’s 2020 hit To Cy & Lee: Instrumentals Vol. 1, this new album reveals an embryonic and undiluted soundscape. The tracks stand as unedited snapshots of DePlume’s unbridled creativity, highlighting the raw synergy between him and his ensemble as they navigate his melodic and poetic intricacies.
The album title itself tells a tale. During DePlume’s inaugural US performance tour in 2022, he interacted with individuals, gathering messages to relay to his audience. Among them, an anonymous plea stood out, urging people to “come with fierce grace.” Such a message encapsulates the album’s essence: a fierce dive into the creative unknown, rendered gracefully through spontaneous composition.
Through Come With Fierce Grace, DePlume draws a parallel to nature’s uninhibited yet synchronized rhythm – bees transferring pollen without collective intent, but contributing to a greater shared beauty. He eloquently captures this ethos in his own words: “The great thing wants to happen, let us allow it to happen.”
In sum, Come With Fierce Grace is not just an album, but an experience – a candid invitation into the creative heart and mind of Alabaster DePlume, revealing the artist in his purest, most spontaneous form.
