Arnold Dreyblatt, a minimalist musician based in New York City, established The Orchestra Of Excited Strings in 1979. Over the years, the lineup has evolved to include Oren Ambarchi, Konrad Sprenger, and Joachim Schütz. Together, they create a unique blend of chimerical rock through the use of bass, computer-controlled guitar, drums, and sine waves. Their sound is often compared to a just intoned response to the iconic band, Steely Dan.
Now approaching his 70s, Dreyblatt has spent over four decades experimenting with instrumentation and challenging traditional tuning methods. Since the release of his notable album, ‘Nodal Excitation’, in 1982, he has utilized The Orchestra Of Excited Strings to bring his mischievous inclinations to life. With their latest album, ‘Resolve’, the band continues to push boundaries and showcase their relevance in today’s experimental music landscape. It is almost expected for experimental musicians in 2023 to explore music outside of equal temperament, and Ambarchi, Sprenger, and Schütz do just that. They skillfully translate Dreyblatt’s vision into a fresh, contemporary perspective, offering a new take on the ‘Nodal Excitation’ mode.
Sprenger takes the helm in the production of ‘Resolve’, using solenoids, sine tone generators, a computer-controlled multichannel electric guitar, and a drum kit. Schütz brings his expertise in electronics and electric guitar, while Ambarchi showcases his mastery of Dreyblatt’s piano wire-strung bass. The album stays true to Dreyblatt’s template but incorporates groove and a polished sheen. In the single ‘Flight Path’, the trio intricately pluck carefully tuned strings over mesmerizing organ drones and an energetic, pulsating rhythm. ‘Shuffle Effect’ takes listeners on a journey through an alternate harmonic version of a Steely Dan classic, ‘Reelin’ in the Years’. Through their distinctive talents and collaboration, Ambarchi, Sprenger, and Schütz breathe new life into Dreyblatt’s timeless compositions.
In the ever-evolving landscape of experimental music, The Orchestra Of Excited Strings stands as a testament to artistic innovation and fearless exploration. With ‘Resolve’, they continue to carve their own path, staying true to Dreyblatt’s pioneering spirit while infusing their own unique style. As the band embraces unconventional tuning and pushes the boundaries of sound, they create an intriguing and captivating sonic experience that resonates with both longtime fans and new listeners. With their contemporary vision and exceptional musical abilities, Ambarchi, Sprenger, and Schütz have firmly established themselves alongside other notable artists in the experimental music scene.
