At the tender age of nine, a young Bisola Olungbenga embarked on her music journey, encouraged by a piano-playing mother and incentivized by candy rewards. Fast forward to today, and this young lyricist has evolved into Aunty Rayzor, a sensational emblem of Nigeria’s rich and diverse music tapestry, adept at blending hip-hop, Afrobeat, R&B, and experimental beats, presenting an evocative audio canvas of modern-day Lagos.
Her debut album, ‘Viral Wreckage’, heralds her metamorphosis from the spirited child, who once competed with her sibling in songwriting, to the powerhouse that gave us the viral 2021 anthem ‘Kuku Corona’. Olungbenga, in curating this album, has collaborated with a global ensemble of masterful producers: from the Congo’s Titi Bakorta to Japan’s Scotch Rolex, and from Brazil’s DJ Cris Fontedofunk to Kenya’s avant-pop futurist Kabeaushé.
The album catapults listeners into Olungbenga’s expansive sound realm with ‘Stuttrap’, where she expertly navigates between Yoruba and English, rap flowing fluidly over Scotch Rolex’s sleek trap production. As we transition into ‘Doko’, the synergy between Aunty Rayzor and Slimcase, the latter having worked with Nigerian luminaries like Wizkid and Mr Eazi, mesmerizes with its amalgamation of West African beats and intricate lyricism. This sonic exploration continues with ‘Bounce’, a track where Olungbenga’s hushed tones juxtapose beautifully against DJ Cris Fontedofunk’s pulsating neo-baile beats, forging an effervescent transcontinental musical alliance.
Tracks like ‘Fall Back’, featuring Titi Bakorta, and ‘You not worthy of my love’, helmed by Kabeaushé, further amplify Olungbenga’s versatile prowess. Whether it’s navigating the realms of vintage Afrobeat with Bakorta’s dulcet tones or venturing into avant R&B with Kabeaushé, Rayzor’s voice remains the anchoring constant, bridging diverse musical landscapes.
However, the brilliance of ‘Viral Wreckage’ lies in Aunty Rayzor’s exceptional ability to remain rooted in her Nigerian heritage while effortlessly assimilating global sounds. It’s this unique marriage of eclecticism with a keen focus that makes the album a revelatory masterpiece. Olungbenga’s journey is an authentic testimony to boundary-less music, making ‘Viral Wreckage’ not just an album but an artistic statement, heralding the emergence of a prodigious talent deserving of global acclaim.
