Avalon Emerson’s latest release, “Four Charm Remixes,” on her own Another Dove label, marks a significant artistic evolution for the globally acclaimed DJ and producer. Known for her masterful techno and house productions, Emerson’s 2023 album, “& The Charm,” saw her embrace dream-pop influences, recalling the guitar-driven sounds of her youth. The accompanying tour featured a full rock band and was often complemented by her signature DJ sets, showcasing her versatility as an artist. This new remix EP brings together dancefloor-ready interpretations of her indie rock sounds, crafted by close friends and contemporaries, highlighting her diverse musical palette.
Avalon Emerson’s journey into music began in a musically rich household in Arizona, where she was exposed to a wide array of genres, from synth pop to rock. Influenced by her parents’ musical tastes, which included Nine Inch Nails, Cocteau Twins, and Depeche Mode, Emerson developed an early interest in music production. At 19, she moved to San Francisco, working as a software developer while immersing herself in the city’s electronic music scene. Her career took a significant leap forward when she relocated to Berlin in 2014, a city known for its vibrant electronic music culture.
In Berlin, Emerson quickly became a staple in renowned clubs such as Berghain’s Panorama Bar and performed at major festivals like Coachella and Primavera Sound. Her 2016 track “The Frontier,” released on the Whities label, was hailed as one of the top tracks of the decade by Resident Advisor. Over the years, she has also released music on labels like Ghostly International’s Spectral Sound and contributed to the prestigious !K7’s DJ-Kicks series. Her productions are characterized by melodic synths and robust percussion, reflecting a deep understanding of both pop and electronic music histories.
Beyond her own productions, Emerson has made a significant impact through her remixes and collaborations. She has remixed tracks for artists such as Slowdive, Christine and the Queens, and Four Tet, showcasing her ability to blend different genres seamlessly. Additionally, Emerson co-founded Buy Music Club, a platform for sharing Bandcamp music lists, emphasizing her commitment to supporting independent music.
