BADBADNOTGOOD (BBNG), the inventive ensemble consisting of Matthew Tavares on keys, Chester Hansen on bass, Alex Sowinski on drums, and Leland Whitty on saxophone, has continually pushed the boundaries of jazz since their formation. The group, which bonded at Humber College’s Music Performance program in 2011, has been lauded for their genre-defying sound and groundbreaking musical exploration.
The quartet first made waves with their 2014 LP, “III,” a daring mix of jazz improvisations, lush ballads, krautrock influences, and futuristic hip-hop rhythms. This album propelled them into the global spotlight, leading to extensive tours and collaborations with top-tier artists worldwide. Their unique approach and fresh sound earned them critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase.
In 2016, BADBADNOTGOOD returned with their highly anticipated album “IV,” released under Innovative Leisure Records. This project marked a significant evolution in their sound, embodying a visionary fusion of various genres. “IV” is often described as sounding like a cosmic jam session featuring the likes of Can, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters, Weather Report, Arthur Russell, and MF DOOM.
The album features a collection of standout tracks that highlight the band’s versatility and innovative spirit. “Time Moves Slow,” with haunting vocals from Sam Herring of Future Islands, is a prime example of their ability to blend emotional depth with musical complexity. The syncopated groove of “Lavender,” a collaboration with Montreal-based producer Kaytranada, showcases their prowess in creating infectious rhythms. “Confessions Pt. II” features the rumbling bass sax of Colin Stetson, while “Love” includes smoky, left-field raps from Mick Jenkins. The epic chords of “Speaking Gently” further exemplify their post-genre virtuosity.
“IV” is not just an album; it is an exploration of limitless musical possibilities. BADBADNOTGOOD’s fearless approach to blending jazz with elements from various musical styles has redefined contemporary jazz and set a new standard for genre-blending artistry. Their innovative spirit and exceptional musicianship have ensured their place at the forefront of modern music. Released in the summer of 2016, “IV” remains a testament to BBNG’s boundless creativity and enduring impact on the music world.
