The year 2025, hailed the emergence of the Bicep duo, Andrew Ferguson and Matthew McBriar, breaking new grounds in a combination of thundering club renditions and mesmerizing dance floor tunes. Beating all odds, the electronic wizardry of Bicep unarguably churned out some of their most electrifying musical pieces with the launch of CHROMA 000.
The Belfast-bred duo, originally established their musical roots in the sprawling city of London, back in 2009. Spending their childhood days together, they formulated a unique bond that went on to shape their shared passion for varied musical genres. As a testament to their growing popularity, they received critical accolades for their debut album ‘Bicep’, which ushered them into the UK Albums Chart, securing the 20th spot. Despite Matthew McBriar’s health scare and brain surgery in 2024, their dedication to music remained unwavered.
In homage to renowned music legends of Detroit techno, Chicago house, and delighting the disco enthusiasts, Bicep paid tribute to influential artists like Carl Craig and Juan Atkins through their creative ingenuity. Their musical journey took another transitional leap in 2025 with their newest creation, CHROMA 000.
The album bustles with diverse experimentation and rhythmic soundscapes designed to awaken the senses. TRACKS like “Bi83” with its twitching acid synths embody the spirit of easy invigoration while ‘A.L.O.E’ with its wistful vocal tweaks settle you into a contemplative state of trance. Listening to ‘STEALL’ is akin to experiencing a supernova of sonic sensation in rapid bursts.
Their journey in creating CHROMA 000, was fueled by their earlier experience in launching ‘Isles’, their second album which saw its release in 2021. The leading track, ‘Apricots’, received a warm welcome from their fans while their succeeding streams drew an international audience spanning over 70 countries worldwide.
Like their fellow Northern Ireland contemporary, Phil Kieran, Bicep has not only etched an indelible mark in the electronic music scene but also garnered accolades beyond UK shores. Their recorded shows at London’s Saatchi Gallery were lauded by The Guardian and the NME, underlining the duo’s talent for presenting innovative and groundbreaking audiovisual performances.
Even as the duo continue to mesmerize their fans, Bicep’s musical odyssey symbolizes an inspirational testament to perseverance and passion. Building upon the foundations laid by artists like Erol Alkan and The Chemical Brothers, Bicep reflects that unwavering dedication to constant evolution and exploration lies at the heart of truly transformative music.
