The Scottish electronic duo, Boards of Canada, known for their rich and often nostalgic atmospheres, delivered a unique musical journey with their EP, “In a Beautiful Place out in the Country”. The four tracks encapsulated in this collection emerged from the same recording sessions that would later give birth to their album “Geogaddi”. While not straying significantly in terms of style from their previous work, notably “Music Has the Right to Children”, this EP does showcase a darker and more contemplative ambiance, which can be described as pastoral and even elegiac.
What’s especially notable about “In a Beautiful Place out in the Country” is its shift in tone and subject matter. The EP appears to delve deeper into historical and contemporary influences, perhaps reflecting the duo’s evolving interests and inspirations at the time of its creation. A particularly intriguing aspect is the allusions to David Koresh’s millennialist sect, the Branch Davidians, both within the music and the accompanying album art. This interest is most notably evident in the image located beneath the disc in the CD release. Speculations suggest that this picture may have been derived from an image of David Koresh himself.
“In a Beautiful Place out in the Country” showcases Boards of Canada’s ability to intertwine their signature soundscapes with thematic depth and historical intrigue. The EP serves as a testament to their evolving artistry, and their prowess in creating deeply atmospheric and evocative electronic music, that doesn’t shy away from addressing complex and sometimes darker themes.
