Electro-pop pioneer Bruce Haack’s mind-boggling and groundbreaking 1974 album is finally being reissued on vinyl after a 40-year hiatus. Haack, who was creating his unique brand of funky electro-pop in Canada before Kraftwerk or YMO came onto the scene, crafted the delightfully eccentric and whimsical ‘Captain Entropy’, which showcased his mastery of bubbling machine rhythms, tape loops, vocoder, and playful arps. This album marked a turning point in electronic music, laying the groundwork for the genre’s future domination.

While still maintaining connections to psych rock, Haack’s ‘Captain Entropy’ planted the seeds for a wave of electronic music to come. Listeners can detect similarities between his music and the early disco and soundtrack works of Patrick Cowley, as well as Ken Nordine records and the experiments of Joe Meek. The album is adorned with elements of sci-fi disco in its opening track, ‘Captain Entropy’, and filled with a rich synth soundscape in ‘Jam’. ‘Army Ants in Your Pants’ introduces a prototype of electro honky tonk, and ‘Walking Eagle’ exhibits fleapit porn cinema soundtrack styles. Additionally, the highlight of the album is the captivating 10-minute jazz loop jam, ‘1973’, reminiscent of the fusion of Elias Tanenbaum’s ‘Arp Art’ era and Carl Stone’s experimental sounds at Shake’s abode.
