Field Records delves into the expansive discography of Celer, the ambient project led by Tokyo-based artist Will Long, with a reissue of the 2012 album Perfectly Beneath Us. Originally released as a limited CD-R on Still*Sleep, this collection has been meticulously remastered by Stephan Mathieu and presented on vinyl, offering a fresh experience of its immersive soundscapes.
Celer’s origins trace back to California in 2005, where it began as a collaborative effort between Will Long and Danielle Baquet-Long. Together, they produced a vast array of self-released material, characterized by its unique, handmade packaging. After Baquet-Long’s untimely passing in 2009, Long continued Celer as a solo project, expanding its reach and influence in the ambient music scene. Alongside his work as Celer, Long has also made significant contributions to ambient music under his own name, releasing works on notable labels like DJ Sprinkles’ Comatonse Recordings and Smalltown Supersound.
The reissue of Perfectly Beneath Us serves as an excellent entry point into Celer’s rich catalogue, featuring four tracks that exemplify Long’s ability to evoke profound emotion through minimalist techniques. Tracks like ‘Distressing Sensations’ and ‘Ultra-terrestrial Yearning’ capture a subtle yet powerful resonance, while the longer compositions ‘Slightly Apart, Almost Touching’ and ‘Absolute Receptivity Of All The Senses’ offer a deep, meditative experience, inviting listeners into a space of contemplation and introspection.
This carefully curated reissue not only brings new life to a previously limited release but also enriches Field Records’ growing collection of evocative ambient and electronic music. With its slow, glacial movements and richly textured soundscapes, Perfectly Beneath Us reaffirms Celer’s place in the ambient music pantheon, providing both longtime fans and new listeners with a compelling sonic journey.
