Prepare to delve into the gritty realms of EBM-techno as Detroit-based outfit Code Industry resurfaces with the reissue of their iconic Structure EP, courtesy of Dark Entries. Comprised of talented musicians Rob Myers, E.N. Sevy, Kyl Crys, and William Keith, Code Industry emerged in 1989 following their previous project, Code Assault. As one of the few Black artists working in the EBM and industrial genres of their time, Code Industry fearlessly tackled themes of racism, media manipulation, and patriotic hypocrisy. Their frigid synths and menacingly whispered vocals pay homage to European EBM acts like Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb, while their adventurous production and high-tech grooves firmly anchor their work within the Detroit techno continuum.
Originally released in 1991 on the legendary Antler-Subway label, the Structure EP showcases Code Industry’s evolution following their debut album, Method of Assembly, released the previous year. Across six tracks, the EP expands upon their earlier work while unveiling hints of the sonic developments to come.
“Behind the Mask (Image Mix)” stands as a standout track, as Code Industry skillfully reworks one of their hits from Method of Assembly into a leaner, more kinetic form. The track is finely sculpted to make a maximum impact on the dancefloor, showcasing their ability to adapt their sound for optimal groove. The instrumental “Fury” sees the outfit delving deeper into the emerging Detroit techno sound, with spare synths and disembodied vocal snippets adding to the track’s atmospheric intensity. In contrast, brooding downtempo cuts like “Ail” and “Crimes Against the People” infuse their cyberpunk aesthetics with politically charged rage, demonstrating the band’s ability to deliver a powerful message through their music.
Code Industry’s Structure EP is a testament to their ability to seamlessly blend elements of EBM, industrial, and Detroit techno. Their dedication to exploring sonic boundaries and addressing social issues makes them a force to be reckoned with. As one of the few Black artists working within the genre during their time, their contributions are all the more significant. With this reissued release, Code Industry’s music continues to captivate audiences, showcasing their pioneering spirit and leaving an indelible mark on the EBM and techno landscapes.
