Coil, the English experimental music group, noteworthy for their profound influence on genres such as gothic rock and dark ambient, made an indelible mark in the music world. Formed in London in 1982 by John Balance and Peter Christopherson from Psychic TV, the duo carved a niche for themselves, exploring themes correlated with the occult, sexuality and alchemy. They were also prominent figures in other bands such as Throbbing Gristle. Despite the group disbanding in 2005, their profound impact has been immortalized through series of posthumous releases.
Among these releases, the pioneering 2016 vinyl reissue of the album called “Recoiled” stands a class apart. Remarkably, this collective work was orchestrated by the contributions of Coil and Nine Inch Nails and has since become a historical artifact for the music faithful. A blend of tracks that were artistically crafted pre-Ableton era, this album includes some groundbreaking versions of NIN classics that were never officially released. The album hosts a versatile set of tracks, each displaying distinctive industrious soundscapes. One such notable variant is the sublime ‘Baby Alarm’ mix, notable for its distinct technoid vibes.
Cementing their artistic prowess, Coil, in alliance with Nine Inch Nails, tailored the gripping and enthralling versions of NIN classics in “Recoiled.” The band brought a unique approach to music production, relying on unconventional techniques and showcasing a penchant for experimentation. With tracks like ‘The Downward Spiral (A Gilded Sickness)’, ‘Closer (Unrecalled)’, and two intriguing reworks of ‘Eraser’, the album emblematizes Coil’s distinctive nature and their pronounced ability to construct evocative and emotionally resonant music.
Behind Nine Inch Nails is the brilliance of American singer, songwriter, and composer, Michael Trent Reznor. Reznor remained the linchpin of NIN right from its formation in 1988 and later brought in the talented English musician and collaborator, Atticus Ross, in 2016. Renowned for his distinct touch in the industrial rock genre, Reznor contributed significantly to the profound success of the “Recoiled.”
Complementing the radiant success of “Recoiled,” several other artists like Stephen Thrower, Danny Hyde, Drew McDowall, have left their indelible imprints in Coil’s various projects. After Balance’s unfortunate death in 2004, Coil ceased to exist, but their creative entity lives on in this unique record. With such classics, the group’s legacy has been kept alive by the fans, underlining Coil’s exceptional influence on the post-industrial scene.
The world of music has witnessed several partnerships, but few can claim the distinction and the intense creative resonance sparked by those between Coil, Reznor, and others on “Recoiled.” This critically acclaimed body of work will continue to reverberate with music enthusiasts worldwide, representing an integral part of one of the most pioneering groups of the post-industrial scene. As Coil’s music unfurls in our ears, listeners are reminded just how revolutionary and transformative their sound truly was.
