Craven Faults, a renowned figure in the British electronic music scene, has recently released his masterpiece album, “Bounds,” in 2024. Known for his auditory storytelling that allows listeners to journey through the landscapes and history of postindustrial Britain, this visionary artist breathed life into the continents of Europe in his latest creation.
Drawing inspiration from the varied terrains of his homeland, Yorkshire, Craven Faults unique narrative approach to composing music sets him apart in the electronic music industry. He has a way of merging geographical and historical elements into his creations. Similar to other notable electronic artists, such as Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada, he is famed for his exclusive technique of making use of analogue synthesizers, electronics, and field recordings to form his musical portrayal of landscapes.
Craven Faults’ album “Bounds” continues the narrative of the postindustrial British landscape that began with the 2023 album, “Standers.” In the track ‘Long Stoop,’ an amalgamation of metallic groans create an ominous aura, while the bass trip-hops through the track, bringing the sound of large urban environments to life. Further into the album, tracks ‘Groups Hollows’ and ‘Waste & Demesne’ bring together a mix of synth ripples, thudding percussion, cyclical strums, icy keys, and trombones, collectively constructing a minimal soundscape, creating a story of lands shaped by nature and human endeavor.
Earlier in his career, Craven Faults released his debut song, Netherfield Works, under Lowfold Works label in 2017. Following this release, he intrigued listeners with Springhead Works and Nunroyd Works in 2019, producing lengthy, hypnotic instrumental pieces, a distinctive style that gave him recognition in the industry, similar to the legendary artist, Jean-Michel Jarre. A year later, he brought forth Erratics & Unconformities, establishing a solid relationship with Yorkshire-based The Leaf Label.
The artist’s album, “Bounds,” released in October 2024, is a tribute to Northern England, showcasing his lifelong engagement with popular culture’s fringes. Like his previous album “Enclosures,” “Bounds” invites listeners on a 37-minute auditory journey, exploring the natural and industrial landscapes of the region. This release, too, gained significant recognition and was made available in five variations, including four limited-edition colored vinyl and an unlimited edition black vinyl.
In a testament to Craven Faults’ influence, he took his music from the studio to live audiences in 2023 and 2024. Conducting four sell-out shows, including an impressive performance at Thwaite Watermill in Leeds, he solidified his position as a captivating live performer. His live shows in London’s Studio 9294, Bristol’s The Cube, and Salford’s The White Hotel added another layer of experience for his fans. Offering more than just an auditory journey, Craven Faults brought his musical narrative to life, capturing the essence of the postindustrial landscape and the spirit of its inhabitants in his performances.
Craven Faults’ “Bounds” represents the new age of long-form hypnotic instrumental works, an art form where music meets storytelling, to paint a vibrant sonic picture of the geographical evolution of postindustrial Britain and Europe. His work is testament to music’s power to imitate life and tell stories, with the artist and his creations emerging as the forerunner of such narrative musical composition.
