Navigating the fluid realms of music, “tds bem Global” is an unapologetic portrayal of global sounds and influences, transcending boundaries and conventions. dadá Joãozinho, in his debut solo album, invites listeners on a hallucinogenic odyssey of 13 tracks, fusing the spirit of dub reggae, punk, hip-hop, samba, and even weaving in tantalizing hints of the unfamiliar.
Originating from Niterói and relocating to São Paulo in 2020 with his artistic ensemble, ROSABEGE, Rocha found himself at a crossroads. As the pandemic halted his plans, he channeled his creativity into his alter ego, dadá Joãozinho. This new identity, encapsulating both homage and diminutive affection, provided Rocha the freedom to venture into previously uncharted musical territories.
Dissociating from the mellifluous Bossa Nova influences of his earlier collective, dadá’s transition to São Paulo’s bustling metropolis marked a tonal shift in his compositions. The utopian echoes of 70s Brazilian music faded, making way for the haunting depths reminiscent of Bad Brains, Bob Marley, and Brazil’s murky history of exile during military dictatorship.
Yearning to break free from this enveloping darkness, dadá sought to create music that was alive and pulsating, commanding bodies to move. Although “tds bem Global” is predominantly a solo endeavor, with dadá helming multiple instruments and sound engineering aspects, it’s palpably inspired by a vast array of musical companions.
The album is a mosaic of varied styles. It opens with the delectably funky, rhythm-heavy “Ô Lulu”, reminiscent of a fantasy collaboration between Arthur Russell and Lee Perry. Tracks like “Cuidado!” exemplify dadá’s versatility, blending elements of hip-hop, Latin, and baile funk into an intoxicating sonic brew. Meanwhile, “VEJA” is a potent mix of poignant vocals and formidable beats, juxtaposed against the ethereal tranquility of “Outro Momento”. The distinctly Brazilian essence is encapsulated in “Pai e Mae”, a track bearing the experimental vibrancy of Tom Zé.
For dadá, this album was a compass guided by an unwavering desire for freedom. It stands as a testament to unbridled artistic expression, unshackled from any preconceived notions of sound aesthetics or lyrical structure. Each track is an unfiltered manifestation of raw emotion and experimentation.
Crafted amidst the chaos of the pandemic, “tds bem Global” is more than just an album. It’s a beacon of hope, echoing through the deserted streets and silent nights, urging fellow artists to harness their creativity. As dadá puts it, the record aims to inspire, urging others to carve their own path, to take risks, and to let their artistry shine brilliantly in the darkest of times.
